A DAY TO EAT OUT…
It wasn’t until I had kids myself that I realized how amazing my mother is.
She beautifully laid down her life 24 hours a day for her husband and her children. All the while fully devoting her life to Christ and growing in her faith daily. Needless to say, she is my hero.
It also wasn’t until I had children of my own that I recognized the significance of Mother’s Day.
(It’s next Sunday in case you forgot. Your welcome moms.)
Yet how could we possibly honor the women who laid down their very lives for us in just one day?
Although we can never repay what they have given, we can take a day and serve them with just a sliver of the service they have lavished on us.
Where do we start?
FOOD! Mother’s day is a perfect day to close the kitchen (allowing it to be the one area of the house that remains clean for more the 30 seconds) and take her out to breakfast… or any meal will do!
Our beautiful city is full of amazing places to eat that use all real and whole food ingredients. Many of them even source all locally grown ingredients that provide us with the best tasting and most nutritious meals there are. Below are just a few that we love and would be great places to take your moms to brunch this Mother’s Day.
- They have the best breakfast burrito I’ve ever had… My stomach is growling just thinking about it.
- It has a bit of a hippy vibe but… maybe that’s why it is so good.
- Everything on their menu has a vegetarian/vegan option as well as a meat option. They use clean, grass fed meats and fresh produce.
- They have a great kids menu.
- They serve breakfast, lunch and dinner.
- The perfect spot for moms with kids… Or any age really.
- You choose a pancake batter, toppings and syrup and grill up your pancakes right at your table.
- They also have breakfast entrees with fresh ingredients and seasonal produce they grow themselves.
- They have gluten and dairy free options and they are delicious.
- Perfect name for Mother’s day! A beautiful spot for brunch. They also serve lunch and dinner.
- The food is delicious and the menu has lots to offer.
- The menu doesn’t specify dairy or gluten free but they do have options if you ask.
Bijou Cafe:
132 SW 3rd Ave Portland, OR
- The menu is full of fresh, real food and they serve breakfast and lunch.
- Limited dairy/gluten free options available. Be sure to ask how they cook the entree you are ordering if you are sensitive to dairy as they cook many of them with butter. The oatmeal and granola are safe!
Gravy:
3947 N Mississippi Ave Portland OR
- You may have to wait a while but it’s worth it!
- Things to try: they are famous for their Creme Brûlée style oatmeal (it can be made with water or soy if you need it dairy free). Their french toast and hash browns are out of this world too!
- This is a somewhat southern style restaurant with a great atmosphere.
- Not much to say other then it is wonderful!
HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!
Elizabeth

There are so many local, fun, and healthy restaurants in Portland! I’d love to add some of our favorites: Industrial Cafe [hidden little gem just of 23rd with yummy, health, and cheap breakfast burritos]
Besaw’s on 23rd [their gluten free pancakes are simply amazing!]
Broder on SE Clinton [little Swedish restaurant that, we would argue, has the best breakfast in Portland!]
Jam on SE Hawthrone [tasty place for finding delicious gluten free / diary free options]
I want to try them all! I love that our city has so many greats spots and so many healthy options. Thank you for sharing!
Love this. Shawn and I don’t eat out very often, but when we do, it’s nice to hear recommendations and try something new. {healthy options always appreciated!}
Happy early Mothers Day Love,
xoxo
Pine State biscuits is amazing! I love their egg and bacon biscuit sandwich and a side of collard greens. Also, their hash ups are a hash brown lovers dream. The only thing that is lacking is the atmosphere, it is way to busy for a family with a grab number of kids.
One of my favorites is BOB’s RED MILL for breakfast. I always feel good about eating there because it is healthy and has many whole grain options and gluten free options in a very fun atmosphere where you can purchase all kinds of great healthy food products as well.
City/State in SE is really good, gigantic portions though, beware.
Isabel Pearl is my favorite breakfast restaurant in Portland! its located on NW 10th between Everett and Flanders. Their menu is healthy and creative, with things like: Coconut French Toast, Banana Blackberry Cake (which can be made w/gluten free flour), Avocado Scramble and Power Burrito. They grow as many ingredients as possible on their Stargazer Farm. [these ingredients are grown following organic farming practices in Sandy, OR.]
ENJOY!

Isabel Pearl is on Living Social today!

Zell’s Cafe on Morrison, I think about 12/13th is one of my favorites
Small little cafe with fantastic and occasionally unique fair.
Some of these are among my best-loved breakfast spots — there are just SO many great ones in Portland! A few more additions… Marco’s (in Multnomah Village) is one of my absolute favorites (and mom-approved — I’ve taken my mom there and she loved it!); their menu is diverse and gives a northwest culinary edge to traditional breakfast fare. The Country Cat (in northeast Portland) is fantastic also… Their amazing French toast was on the cover of Portland Monthly a few issues ago. And if this beautiful weather holds out until next weekend, The Waffle Window on Hawthorne is super fun (and ultra budget friendly). Happy breakfast dining to all the moms out there!
Petite Provence on Alberta… yummy! Also, Pine State Biscuits on Alberta
Veggie Grill in Beaverton has quickly become our go-to restaurant when a home cooked meal isn’t an option. It’s plant-based nirvana! And when the family is torn between plant-based and MEAT — you can’t beat Dick’s Kitchen in NW Portland. Plant-based and carnivore options cooked to perfection — their sandwich buns are fresh-baked and so yummy. nom…nom…nom…
I absolutely adore breakfast in Portland, it’s by far my favorite meal to eat out at! Some of my favorites are:
1. Detour Cafe. Little adorable breakfast/lunch place on SE Divison.
2. Helser’s. Really great family place, great environment, on Alberta.
3. Tin Shed. Classic Portland breakfast spot, and for a reason! Also on Alberta.
4. Screen Door. Southern style breakfast! Always a very long wait, but VERY worth it. E Burnside.
5. Isabel’s on NW 10th. Beautiful all glass building right on the street.
I have been a little nervous trying to find somewhere to get dinner for Mother’s Day that I can make reservations. I would like somewhere more conversation friendly than The Screen Door or Montage and what not. Anyone have any yummy suggestions for me to take my mama?
